A Brief History of the Torlak Family

In the 1940’ s, Mustafa Torlak, originally from Rize in the Black Sea region moved to İstanbul with his family. Upon arrival he expanded his business from building fishing and wooden boats to constructing steel vessels. Here he established his first shipyard along with his two brothers in the Golden Horn Bay where they built new vessels and worked in repairs. In the beginning of the 1980’ s a government policy ordered all shipyards in the Golden Horn to move to the Tuzla Bay area, another region in Istanbul.

Adnan Torlak, second in line to his father, along with brothers were at this time also working in the family business, sowing the seeds of a multi generational family establishment.

After moving to Tuzla, the shipyard was renamed as “Torgem Shipyard” the family by now also owned two bulkers and two tankers thus expanding into ship owning. At the end of the decade the neighboring shipyard Dentaş was also incorporated consequently expanding the total area owned to forty thousand sqm.

In the early 1990’ s the Adnan Torlak family branch and his two brothers owned two shipyards and four vessels. In the following years the decision was made to focus solely on shipyard works, taking a pause on ship owning. This was followed by a period of upgrading the shipyards, building new, higher capacity cranes, purchasing new machinery, a new floating dock and other improvements.

In March of 2006 Adnan Torlak and his two brothers decided to end their partnership. Mr. Adnan Torlak along with his son Cihan Torlak and his daughter Neslihan Torlak took over the ownership of the Dentaş Shipyard.

In April 2018 the family having been wanting to exit the shipyard business sold Dentaş Shipyard and carried out their responsibilities until July 2018.

In September 2018 the new newly formed Atomar with Cihan Torlak acting as the Chairman of the Board and Neslihan Torlak as Vice Chairman, purchased the first vessel.

Currently the company owns two sister dry bulkers at 18.000 dwt.

With the establishment of Atotech Marine GMBH & CO KG in Hamburg, Germany, Neslihan Torlak and Cihan Torlak are now aiming to lend their knowledge gained in shipyard management to offer services as a solution partner in repairs and new building projects also providing any kind of technical and consumable supplies to vessels passing through Turkey and the vicinity.
